Westcoast BJJ
Welcome

Don and De La Riva

The West Coast BJJ & MMA Association is supporting Martial Arts clubs by connecting them with a professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts team. We respond to the needs of the individual Martial Arts clubs offering our services as part of a respectful business relationship. Each club decides which role they want us to play in their business and how much assistance they need. Most associate clubs are well established businesses that simply need help in responding to the increase in popularity of the BJJ and MMA sports.

Our own four clubs located in Abbotsford, Burnaby, Maple Ridge and Port Coquitlam have been joined by clubs in Chilliwack, New Westminster, North Burnaby, North Vancouver, Langley, Coquitlam, Richmond, Surrey and Vancouver. Some of these clubs ask us to provide regular instructions while others have us come in for seminars and promotions as part of the De la Riva Jiu-Jitsu team.

All students benefit from the association by getting access to high quality instruction and to multiple training locations. All clubs benefit from the association by being given instant credibility as well as advertising/ purchasing opportunities. All costs are shared keeping the expense to each club to a minimum. This allows every associated club to provide professional and affordable Martial Arts services to a constantly growing student base. Don and De La RivaRicardo de la Riva is on the cutting edge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Voted as one of the top five technical fighters of all times by his Brazilian peers, every BJJ school on the planet is teaching his famous de la Riva guard. He started training Jiu-Jitsu in 1980 under the legendary Carlson Gracie and quickly became one of his most famous fighters, gaining victories for the Carlson Gracie Team over Royler, Rolker and Royce Gracie in competition.

Ricardo de la Riva has more than 40 representative clubs around the world, with the West Coast BJJ & MMA team being the official de la Riva Jiu-Jitsu Association in Canada. We have locations in Maple Ridge, Abbotsford, Port Coquitlam and Burnaby, British Columbia. Ricardo de la Riva visits our academy regularly for seminars and belt promotions. We visit and train at his Rio de Janeiro academy every year and we also train with de la Riva during his frequent training camps in Miami, Florida. Don and De La Riva

Carlson Gracie, Sr. was the eldest son of Carlos Gracie and he learned Jiu-Jitsu from his father. He founded one of the most victorious mixed martial arts teams to date, which spawned many champions as well as the Brazilian Top Team. Carlson fought a total of eighteen vale tudo fights himself and proved to be the pioneer of MMA sport. While other Gracie's avoided punches and kicks he was the first to combine these techniques with his excellent Jiu-Jitsu skills. Most notable are his four matches with Valdemar Santana, who had defeated his uncle Helio Gracie. In October 1955 Carlson fought Santana to a draw in a Jiu-Jitsu match. In 1956 and 1957 Carlson won two fights and in 1959 they again fought to a draw.

Carlson Gracie was a passionate teacher who deeply cared about his students and felt strongly about his style of Jiu-Jitsu. Carlson suddenly passed away on February 1st, 2006 in Chicago leaving his uniquely powerful style of Jiu-Jitsu as his legacy.
